Today we have DVDs, compact disks, MP3s, and the web for all our musical needs. However, not one of these would be possible without the advent of the record player, one of the most significant components of musical technology of all time. It was so pioneering that after its invention in 1877, nearly one hundred years passed prior to it was replaced by new technology. And still today, players carry a classic musical feel that ensures they are still extremely popular with music fans all over the world. Today, anytime one thinks of the turntable, it’s often the Technics or perhaps the Crosley Record Player. Yet over one hundred years ago, the name that was of most importance was Thomas Edison.

In 1877, Thomas Edison produced what he referred to as the phonograph. His initial records were produced of tinfoil. These records had a spiral groove that went along the surface. A hand-cranked appliance which had a needle, or stylus, was used to read the grooves vibrating based on the texture. This was ultimately referred to as the hill-and-dale technique. The vibrations ran up the stylus, through a metal conduit, all the way to a large speaker. These early speakers made the vibrations into more audible sound.

At the time Edison completed his creation, he was far more interested in its various scientific purposes as opposed to its musical potential. This left further innovations to other scientists and inventors.

Several years later, Emile Berliner made the first disk record, and had it patented in 1896. Berliner’s design took its origin from Edison’s, but rather than using the hill-and-dale method, which had the grooves go up and down, his method, the varying lateral direction method, had textures on the sides of the grooves. The varying later direction (VLD) was embraced right away, and very soon Edison’s hill-and-dale method was left behind.

It wasn’t long before mass production of disk records became possible when Berliner invented the matrix record. This master copy allowed for duplicates to be pressed indefinitely. At this time, record players were still running off of the power of the hand crank. But when the late 19th century rolled around, so did electricity. Soon after the electric-powered record player was released. Unlike the hand-cranked record players which could range in speed according to the strength of the person, electrical record players supplied a consistent speed. This resulted in zero variation in the music’s tempo.

Ultimately, record players got so well liked that whole families gathered around them in order to take pleasure in top quality entertainment. Early versions of the prior-song and next-song functions of present day Mp3 players were also made during this time period. In order to choose which song was to be played, a listener would place the needle in one of the blank grooves located between the textured ones.
